These Companies Hire Medical Billers and Coders to Work From Home
Medical billing and coding jobs were among the very first jobs that were able to be done remotely, away from an office setting, and they have become popular career fields because of it. These are especially popular jobs with women because of the flexibility they offer.
Even though these are technically two different types of jobs, they are closely related in nature because both jobs involve processing patient data for insurance purposes.
Like all jobs in the healthcare industry, medical billing and coding jobs are stable, fast-growing, and are in high demand. These jobs also require special training and certifications and many of the classes that must be taken to become a certified biller or coder are the same.
What is Medical Billing and Coding?
In short, a medical coder must read and analyze patients’ medical records, which include the diagnosis, and any treatments that were performed, and then they have to translate that information according to a standard medical classification system.
A medical biller takes the information that has been translated and prepares it to be submitted to the insurance companies for payment. Billers must also follow up with the insurance companies to make sure the healthcare providers are paid in a timely manner.
Where to Get Training
In order to qualify to work as a medical biller or coder, you’ll need to have at least an associate degree in a medical billing and coding program. After you have successfully completed the medical billing and coding program, you must then take exams to become certified. There are a number of different certifications, and you’ll have to pass an exam for each one.
Many community colleges, trade schools, and online universities offer medical billing and coding programs. Community colleges are usually a better option because they’re generally less expensive to attend than online universities. They also usually offer career services that can help you find a job when you graduate.
You can also find a list of accredited schools through All Allied Health Schools.
It’s important to make sure that the college or university offering the program is accredited. Some employers may not recognize your degree if it was offered by an unaccredited source.
How Much Do Medical Billers and Coders Make?
The average median salary for medical billers and coders is $40,350, according to All Allied Health Schools, a resource for aspiring students of the healthcare industry.
Before Working Remotely
One thing to keep in mind is most of the companies that I have listed below will require at least 1 full year of billing or coding experience before they will hire you. What this means is that after you have completed your program and tested for your certifications, you may need to work onsite, at your local hospital, clinic, nursing home, surgery center, or physician’s office in order to gain the experience before you’re able to work from home.

Watch for Scams
Also, be on the lookout for scams. Scammers tend to target those that are just getting started. Anyone offering a billing or coding job from home, along with free training, is a scammer. No employer is going to offer you free training in these jobs because they require special certifications. While plenty of companies do offer legitimate remote billing and coding jobs, as I mentioned above, most will require that you have at least one year of experience working on-site before they’ll hire you to work from home.
