Work From Home Jobs That Aren’t Multi-Level-Marketing
For whatever reason, many people, especially women, seem to think the only way to earn money from home is to sign up with a multi-level marketing company.
Honestly, nothing can be farther from the truth. That may have been correct 30 years ago, but today there are literally thousands of work from home jobs out there.
I understand the need for many to able to set their own schedule, which MLMs offer. But there are many remote jobs out there that allow you to make your own schedule.
Unlike multi-level marketing, you can actually make some money without alienating family and friends in the process.
In this post, I’ve put together a list of companies that allow you to work from home and choose your own hours.
Academic Test Scoring
These jobs involve scoring students’ tests and essays. Most of these will require a bachelor’s degree or higher to be considered.
ACT – This company hires Readers to work remotely to read and score student essays. They require at least a bachelor’s degree.
Vericant – They hire remote Raters for student language assessments. Must have at least a bachelor’s degree, be a native English speaker and have a good command of English grammar.
Accounting and Bookkeeping
AccountingDepartment.com – This company hires Accounting Specialists to work from home. They offer full-time, part-time, and flex-time schedules. They require at least three years of full-charge bookkeeping experience.
Belay – They hire remote Bookkeepers and allow you to work as few or as many hours as you choose.
Greenback Expat Tax Services – They hire remote US Expat Tax Accountants. You can work when you want and take on as many clients as you wish.
Captioning
Captioning is the process of displaying text on television, videos, or film. This can be done live or pre-recorded.
CaptioningStar – They hire remote Freelance Captioners. They require previous experience.
Dotsub – This company hires Freelance Captioners to work from home. To apply, you must complete the registration, and they’ll contact you if you meet their requirements.
Rev – This company hires Captioners to work from home who have no prior experience.
Customer Service
These are telephone-based jobs, however, they allow you to work your own schedule.
Alorica – They hire agents to work from home doing customer service, sales, and technical support.
iQor – This call center hires remote Call Center Agents. They require at least one year of customer service experience.
LiveOps – They hire remote agents for customer service and inbound sales. You can choose your schedule, but you must work at least 7.5 per week, and you must work at least 30-minute blocks.
NexRep – They hire agents to work from home doing customer service and sales.
ESL Teaching and Tutoring
These jobs involve teaching English as a second language to both children and adults.
AmazingTalker – No degree or certification is necessary to teach English with this company, however having a certification will boost your chances of getting hired. Each class lasts 25-minutes, and you’re able to set your own rate and schedule.
Cambly – They hire remote ESL Teachers. There’s no minimum hourly commitment, and you’re free to choose your own hours. The pay is $0.17 per minute, which equates to $10.20 per hour. They pay weekly, every Monday via PayPal.
DaDaABC – They hire remote ESL Teachers part-time. You must have a bachelor’s degree and be a native English speaker.
iTalki – This company hires remote ESL Teachers and remote Community Tutors. To teach with them, you must have a bachelor’s degree in education and a language teaching certificate or a teaching license. Online Tutors with this company must be at least 18 years of age or older and must be a native speaker of the language you will be tutoring.
Landi – To teach with this company, you must have at least a bachelor’s degree and a TEFL, TESOL, or CELTA certificate.
Magic Ears – Must have a bachelor’s degree and be a native English speaker. US and Canada only.
PalFish – No bachelor’s degree is needed, but you must have a language teaching certificate such as a TEFL, CELTA, or TESOL.
Same Speak – No experience is necessary, but you must be at least 16 years of age and a native English speaker.
SayABC – To teach English with this company, you must have a bachelor’s degree, be a native English speaker, and have at least 1-year of experience teaching.
VIPKid – This company requires a bachelor’s degree. They also require some type of teaching experience, but not necessarily with children.
Proofreading and Editing
For this type of job, you’ll need to be good at spotting spelling and grammatical errors and be familiar with different writing styles. You’ll also need at least a bachelor’s degree. Some of these require previous experience.
Edit Fast – This company requires that you have a bachelor’s degree and previous experience to work with them.
Editor World – Must have a bachelor’s degree or higher, and previous editing experience.
EditorLive – This company hires remote editors. You must be currently employed by or enrolled in a university within the US with a GPA of at least 3.6 OR have a bachelor’s degree and at least five years’ experience.
Polished Paper – To be considered for a position with this company, you complete the application and pass a skills test.
Search Engine Evaluator
Search engine evaluators help to improve search functionality. These part-time positions usually pay between $12 and $15 per hour. You must have excellent spelling and grammar skills. These positions typically require working between 1 and 4 hours per day.
Appen – They hire remote Search Engine Evaluators and Social Media Evaluators.
Lionbridge – This company hires remote Raters for search engine evaluation.
Social Media
These jobs involve moderating and managing the social media accounts of businesses by creating new content and posting to social media and monitoring comments. You must be familiar with all social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest.
Ignite Social Media – They hire remote Freelance Social Media Managers. They require at least two years of college coursework or the equivalent.
ModSquad – This company hires remote Mods to moderate social media forums and manage communities. They match projects to your skillset.
VoiceHub – They hire remote social media jockeys to promote their service and answer customer questions on their Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook accounts.
Stylists
These positions involve putting together matching clothing, jewelry, or home decor for subscription customers.
Modsy – Remote furniture Stylists.
Rocksbox – Remote jewelry Stylists.
Stitch Fix – Remote Stylists. These positions are location-specific.
Transcription
Transcription involves listening to recordings and then typing what you’ve heard, verbatim, into a document. You must have fast and accurate typing skills.
1-888-TYPE-IT-UP – No experience is required, but you must pass a skills test. They also don’t require a minimum typing speed; they’re looking for accuracy.
3Play Media – No experience required, but you must type at least 75 WPM and have a strong command of English grammar.
AccuTran Global – For general transcription, no experience is required, but you’ll need to pass a skills test to be considered for a position.
Babbletype – No experience is required, but you must be fluent in English. You also need basic knowledge of grammar and excellent spelling.
Go Transcript – They don’t require previous experience, but you must have excellent English skills.
Scribie – They don’t require any previous experience, but you need to be proficient in English, both spoken and written, and have excellent communication skills.
Translators
Translation is the process of translating text from one language to another, so you must be fluent in more than one language.
Cactus Global – They hire freelance translators. They require at least one year of translation experience.
Gengo – They hire professional translators called “Reviewers” to work 4 to 8 hours per week. They require at least three years of experience. You must pass a skills test to be considered.
Lingosaur – They hire experienced freelance Translators. You must pass a skills test.
Tutoring
These positions require helping students with a variety of subjects or test preparation. Some require a bachelor’s degree.
Brainfuse – To tutor with this company, you must have a bachelor’s degree. To register as a tutor with them, send your resume to jobs@brainfuse.com.
BuddySchool – This platform allows you to sign up and get matched to students needing Online Tutors.
Chegg Tutors – This company hires remote Online Tutors who have a bachelor’s degree or are currently enrolled in college.
Revolution Prep – Online Tutors with this company must have a bachelor’s degree and teaching experience.
Yup – This company allows you to sign up and help students with on-demand, online tutoring.
Virtual Assistants
Byron – This company hires remote Virtual Assistants, and they allow you to choose the projects you wish to work on.
Fancy Hands – No experience is required. The more you work, the more you’ll make.
Things to Keep in Mind
Please keep in mind that most of these jobs are independent contractor positions, and are part-time. No benefits are offered by the companies. And you’ll also be responsible for paying your own taxes because they won’t be taken out of your check.
Some of these jobs will also require that you have a quiet work area.
