Teach ESL With These 25 Companies
If you love kids, then teaching English as a second language online is a great way to work from home, and these jobs are in high demand.
Because the students are overseas, the hours are usually late night, overnight, or early morning. These jobs are great for night owls or extremely early risers and are perfect for stay-at-home moms or those looking for a part-time job.
Remote ESL jobs typically pay anywhere from $14 to $25 per hour, depending on whether it’s a teaching job or a tutoring job. And, it will also depend on the education required by the company.
Education Needed to Teach or Tutor English Online
To teach ESL, most companies will require a bachelor’s degree or higher in any major. However, a few companies hire people to tutor English, requiring a high school diploma.
Whether an ESL teacher or a tutor, almost all companies will require one of the following foreign language teaching certificates:
- TESOL –Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages
- TEFL –Teaching English as a Foreign Language
- TESL – Teaching English as a Second Language
- CELTA – Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults
Each of these certifications requires completing a 120-hour course, and all of these courses can be taken online.
Most of the companies listed here will accept a TEFL certification. You can obtain a TEFL certification through the TEFL Professional Development Institute class.
Equipment Needed to Teach or Tutor English Online
You’ll need to have a desktop or laptop computer with reliable high-speed internet service. You won’t necessarily need hard-wired internet, but you’ll have to have a stable connection with fast upload and download speeds.
You’ll also need to have a webcam and VoIP software like Skype, Facetime, or Google Hangouts.
Some companies may require using a cellphone or tablet instead of a computer.
If you’re teaching school-age children, you’ll also need to have teaching props such as flash-cards, plushy toys, hand puppets, and a dry-erase board and markers. You can find great options by clicking on the links.
The exact requirements will be listed on the company’s website, so be sure to read them to find out what you’ll need.
