What are Independent Contractor Jobs?

An independent contractor is someone who is usually self-employed. They work for a company but are not actually an employee. It’s like being a freelancer. They are typically set up either as a sole proprietor or a business entity.

An independent contractor is an individual who provides services or work to another entity as a non-employee.

Working as an independent contractor has both advantages and disadvantages. Let’s explore both.

Advantages to Working as an Independent Contractor

Some of the pros of working as an IC include:

You Have no Boss

As an independent contractor, you’re your own boss. You have the ability to work as little or as much as you want, pick your own hours, and work from anywhere you choose.

Earn More Money

On average, independent contractors are paid more than employees for doing the same job. This is because companies do not provide benefits to contractors; therefore, they compensate independent contractors with a higher wage.

Tax Breaks

If you’re an IC, the IRS allows you to deduct any reasonable and necessary business expenses, and you can deduct business-related expenses from your taxable income.

For example, if you work out of your home, you can deduct your phone bill or other costs related to your home office. There are many other tax deductions offered to freelancers as well.

Disadvantages to Working as an Independent Contractor

Some of the cons of working as an IC include:

No Employee Benefits

Being an IC means you pay for your own insurance at a higher rate than employers do. You lose money when you take a vacation or are sick. And you don’t get a retirement plan. If you can’t afford to save for these things, you’re out of luck.

This also includes no unemployment insurance or workers’ compensation benefits because companies aren’t required to pay these for independent contractors.

Lack of Job Security

When you’re an IC, you only get paid if you work. If business is slow, no paychecks happen. This is not the case for employees. Even if it’s slow, employees will still earn their hourly pay.

Pay Your Own Taxes

Independent contractors must pay their own employment and income taxes because companies are not responsible for paying these taxes if you’re a 1099 employee.

You Supply the Equipment

Working as an independent contractor means the company won’t provide any equipment to you for work or pay to have your home office set up. You will need to provide your own computer, software, printer, internet, etc.
